Alma del Movimiento Sigue

By H.R. LLAMAS

On July 11, 2025, the nonrofit organization El Movimiento Sigue (EMS), La Cucaracha’s parent company, had their grand opening at their new location The opening Ceremonia featured  traditional Mexica dancers, catered food, and was followed by a welcoming reception. Guests then were invited to tour the facility and meet the staff.

Showcasing expertly displayed pictures of  past events, legendary icons, and accomplishments, guests were able to gain a sense of the impact EMS provides to La Comunidad. The evening was full of events and was such a success that even an impending thunderstorm did not stop the community from coming together.

EMS has been active since 2020, but the legacy is a true testament to the foundation established Chicana/o activists long ago. With many members being veterans of the Chicana/o movement. The group has since grown into a full nonprofit organization and now has two full time employees and board members of elders.

Victoria Obregon, PhD, the acting board president of EMS said that “the new location provides more space to organize events and has better access to the local community.”

El Movimiento Sigue has been active in La Comunidad for many years; some notable fundamental events include: The Rita J. Martinez ConferenceThe Cinco de Mayo Celebrations and Parade, and the Take-it-Down protests. They also led successful efforts to establish the first ever Chicana/o license plate in the country.

As the events unfolded, the clouds abruptly released rain, thunder and lightning; yet community members stayed engaged, and onlookers continued to stop.

One passerby struggling to maneuver his wheelchair through the sidewalk made his way towards the tents, without skipping a beat Dr. Obregon, EMS acting president, generously offered food and water to the local community member. He graciously accepted the meal and rested before continuing his way.

A true testament to the Corazon of EMS — the first person served at the new location transpired to be a disabled indigent person seeking shelter.

Whether it is small acts of kindness that go unnoticed or organizing large community events — El Movement Sigue continues to honor the Corazon and Alma de los originales del Movimiento Chicana/o de los 60s and 70s. By supporting La Comunidad through community engagement and providing educational opportunities the movement continues.
