I encourage recycling and up-cycling!  One of my favorite materials to work with is denim, specifically jeans, shirts, etc.  Quilts, bags, pouches, aprons, and patches are some of the ways to recycle those comfy jeans.  I am sure everyone has an old pair that are past their prime.  Creating feathers from the seams from old jeans is easy, quick (as most of my articles are) and appropriate for teens on up.  Feathers can be used in wall hangings, jewelry, key rings, etc.

Always remember to reach out to others, try something new or different and creative, and continue now more than ever to support those working for justice!

Materials and supplies:

•Used pair of jeans.
•Scissors
•Paper pattern
•T pin, large safety pin, or large needle

•Optional: beads, leather, cord, metal rings, earring fixings, etc.

1. Choose jeans to cut up and use for project. Make feather shapes out of paper. Fold paper in half and make shape. Can make large or small.
2.    Trace pattern onto jean seams.  Be sure to line center fold on jean seam.  Outside seams and inside seams give different effect.
3.   Using sharp scissors, cut out shape.
4.   Using a sharp needle (or pin), pull out threads to center of feather and fluff out feather.  Trim threads as needed.
5.   Using an awl or sharp tool, poke a hole in top and thread cord, ring, or leather through hole.  Can decorate with beads or other decorative touches.  Done!
