Bus driver saves the day

PUEBLO — From the driver’s seat of his city bus, Paul Trujillo saw smoke and flames and sprang into action earlier this month. He stopped the bus and ran to warn others. Using the fire extinguisher in the bus, he knocked the fire down.

Trujillo is being called a hero by the resident of the threatened home, but said he didn’t do anything that anyone else would have done.

“I was just surprised by the fence being on fire so I pulled over and did what I could to help,” said Trujillo. “I felt like I was just doing the right thing and what anyone else would do.”

A grateful resident, Evelyn English, said she was unaware of the fire and that without Trujillo’s intervention, the fire could have spread to her home.

“He came pounding on the door to let us know that the fence and the gate was on fire,” said English. “If he hadn’t done that, it probably would have gone into the home itself. It could have been so much worse.”

Trujillo has been a Pueblo Transit driver for 11 months, according to a press release from the city.
