Featuring keynote Dr. Darlene Sampson and Comedian Shed G

Dr. Darlene Sampson, a Denver-based consultant on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, is the keynote speaker for PAACO’s annual Stars and Lights dinner and dance from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Feb. 1 at Colorado State University Pueblo’s Occhiato Ballroom.
Dr. Sampson, a proud graduate of Pueblo’s Central High School, is an equity consultant, a clinical social worker and holds a Ph.D in culturally responsive pedagogy. She lives by her late parents’ mantra: “Giving back to others is in your DNA-you must respect and honor the shoulders you have stood on.” With that thinking in mind, Dr. Sampson has maintained a space of social justice and cultural humility as she works across the education and social work fields as an administrator, leader, equity specialist, and counselor.

Also in the line-up for the event is comedian, actor and radio personality, Shedrick Garrett — better known as Shed G. Whether he’s performing in comedy clubs across the nation or hosting major concerts in arenas; his gift is bringing a funny, positive, and professional atmosphere to the stage.
PAACO, also known at the Pueblo African American Concern Organization, has been in existence since the fall of 1992. Its purpose is to provide scholarships, mentoring, and tutoring to minority students in the community of Pueblo. From two scholarships awarded in 1992, PAACO has changed the lives of more than 300 students who have received scholarships.
Scholarships are awarded in increments of $500 per semester, with a possible total commitment of $4,000 for four years of study. These scholarships are awarded to those students who succeed in avoiding self-limiting behaviors, remain in school, and continue to meet the identified criteria. Identified criteria include preference given to minority applicants, graduate of a Southern Colorado high school, a 2.5 high school GPA or 2.5 cumulative college GPA, and evidence of financial need. Applicants must reapply each school year for ongoing support.
